What is the Digital Nomad Visa?

The digital nomad visa is a residence permit for telecommuters. This visa is international, aimed at foreigners who are not nationals of the European Union. It allows them to work for companies based in other countries, while they enjoy the wonders that Spain has to offer. Of course, for this to be possible, it is necessary to use computer, telematic and telecommunication means and systems. This legal figure is included in the Startups Law (click if you want to know what it is!).

Let’s remember that the visa allows working ONLY for companies located outside Spain. If you work for companies inside the country (let’s think of a second job), the work for such companies cannot exceed 20% of the total professional activity.

Academic Background and Professional Experience:
Applicants must be graduates or postgraduates from prestigious universities or business schools, or have at least three years of professional experience.
Real and Continuous Activity:
The company contracted must have real and continuous activity.
Teleworking:
It must be proven with documentation that the work activity can be performed by teleworking.
Preexisting Employment Relationship:
The applicant must demonstrate that the employment relationship with the non-resident company has existed at least 3 months prior to submitting the application, together with documents proving the terms and conditions of the remote activity.

Features

It is specially designed for those outside Spain. Applicants are granted a 1-year permit to reside and work throughout the national territory. If the period of work is shorter, the visa will have the same duration.

After one year, a residence permit must be applied for.

However, for those who are already legally in Spain, a 3-year permit is granted to reside and work throughout the national territory.

Where to Apply for Residency

Visa applications must be submitted to Diplomatic Missions and Consular Posts, i.e. Embassies and Consulates.

The Residence Authorization will be issued at the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE).
